In this presentation I will explore how fantasy movies, video games, audiobooks, etc. use different English dialects as a storytelling shortcut. Included in this will be a discussion of why dwarfs are always Scottish, Elves are always Irish, and why the use of British accents in sword and sorcery fantasy is based on North American folk beliefs (not facts) and leads to the exclusion of women and racialized groups.
