Tying History & Myth to your Novel
Myths and legends are part of every society.  They have been tales of grand adventures, moral lessons, explanations of how the world worked, comforting companions to ease the uncertainty of life.  So many modern tales can be traced back into myths of ore.

Please join our guest Chuck Wendig as they talk about these ancient, cornerstone tales and how they are used even today!

Embroidery in Costume Design
Town Clock Stitchers is a group of people who share a mutual interest in embroidery — a guild.  Our guild was formed 29 years ago in Halifax to gather in fellowship and to continue learning and teaching embroidery to each other and to our community as opportunities arise.  Some of us are beginner stitchers, others are embroidery veterans.  Some of us like traditional embroidery; others add a modern twist to old techniques…which leads us to Hal-Con.

This year we want to explore and discover how embroidery can become a part of the Hal-Con experience.  We’ll provide information on types of embroidery that can be used in costume design with examples from our own collections as well as images from sci-fi based movies and television.  We’ll go over the resources available and ideas on how to use them.  Our goal is to teach, its a significant part of our mandate as a guild.  This year we want to learn from you…and next year we hope you can learn from us.

Philosophy of Comics
Many people believe that comics are a shallow form of entertainment, nothing more than bright colours and tight spandex, but we know that's not true. In this presentation I will explore how fantasy movies, video games, audiobooks, etc. use different English dialects as a storytelling shortcut. Fiction Meets Science: Ex Machina, Artificial Intelligence and the Robotics Industry
The conflation of AI and fiction in the cultural imaginary helps to drive the fantasy aspect of the robotics/AI industry that encourages the view that there is no difference between a computing machine and a human.  If fiction offers an exploration and interrogation of the shifting terrain of what it means to be human, the industry’s overly literal readings of fiction fetishize the technology, strip it of its cultural and historical context, and claim it for the here and now. While the industry exploits fiction to help animate machines and bring them to “life” in the name of a certain technological future, it erases the “fictiveness” of the fiction that keeps open the question of  the future and what it means to be human.

My talk--“Fiction Meets Science: Ex Machina, Artificial Intelligence and the Robotics Industry”--will  argue that we need to restore the gap between the literary and scientific imaginings of AI and robots. Resisting literal readings of fiction, it considers the ways in which metaphors shape our reading of humans and other animals. For instance, in the field of AI, rather than the computer serving as a metaphor for the brain, the brain has come to serve as a metaphor for the computer. The film Ex Machina, as a modern day Frankenstein story, exposes the consequences of this metaphor that reduces humans to computing machines that in turn entraps them in an algorithmic logic under corporate control. In this film, it is not Ava, the programmed machine, that is the subject of the experiment, but rather Caleb who finds himself locked in the robot lab by the end of the story.

2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. While Shelley's novel is very much a product of its cultural and political milieu, Frankenstein remains eerily relevant. This panel will discuss both the novel itself and contemporary iterations and reflections on the Frankenstein myth.

Laser Tag - Friday
Action Laser Tag is located in Halifax! Our battlefield offers camouflaged barricades, hide-outs, forts, action zones and more. We have different taggers to accommodate different ages and a variety of game options like team elimination, aliens vs. marines, domination and free-for-all.

Each battle is typically 10 minutes in length with players averaging a total of 5 to 6 games in an hour. Most of our games are played in dim light to add to the excitement and challenge of true laser tag.

Our facility also includes a party room and personalized dog-tags that are made on the spot. We offer group rates for birthday parties, teams and corporate. Action Laser Tag is an independently owned and operated local business that was born out of a dad’s desire to have some combat style fun with his kids and family that included more than just Nerf guns! It started in 2010 as an outdoor and mobile business that has since grown into the largest indoor laser tag facility in Halifax.

Action Laser Tag is a fun and exciting activity for everyone.

Pandemic Survival is an “extreme” version of Pandemic where teams of two will face each other in an epic battle to save the world. Their goal: to be the first team to find all four cures, or to be the last team still alive at the end of the game. In this tournament-style version of the game, all teams will face the same problems: their player cards will all be placed in the same order before the game; the infected cities are the same for everyone; the Epidemics strike at the same time for all teams; every team has the same role cards. The only difference is the decisions they will make! Their strategic choices will lead each team in different directions, and one strategy will pay off in the end and lead to victory.

by Edward D. Wood Jr.

Publication date 1959
Usage Public Domain
Topics Sci-Fi, Horror

Language English
From IMDb: "Can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?" That's the question on the lips of the narrator of this tale about flying saucers, zombies and cardboard tombstones. A pair of aliens, angered by the "stupid minds" of planet Earth, set up shop in a California cemetery. Their plan: to animate an army of the dead to march on the capitals of the world. (The fact that they have only managed to resurrect three zombies to date has not discouraged them.) An intrepid airline pilot living near the cemetery must rescue his wife from this low-budget terror. "Can you prove it *didn't* happen?"

Let's Try To Have Nice Things
Social media has changed the way that people connect, communicate and share their interests.  For better and worse.  While it has opened up a world of information, broken down barriers and built communities, it has also given a sense of anonymity that has built a safe space for internet trolls and a kind of bullying that has often led to the adage: "This is why we can't have nice things!"

Two of Hal-Con's Facebook group administrators will share their experiences moderating large online communities.  They will offer tips and tricks for others looking to grow an online community as well as offer their thoughts on what good community members can do to help.  The panel is structured in a Q&A format rather than a presentation so bring your questions, suggestions and other ideas!

Truth and Reconciliation in the Star Trek Universe
Star Trek has long been recognized for pushing boundaries when it comes to women's rights and race relations. But how does it fare when it comes to representing indigenous peoples in the series? This presentation will explore how indigenous groups are presented and represented in Stark Trek and other science fiction television series through examples of specific episodes and actors. Respectful discussion of the relevant issues will be encouraged.

Cosplay and Diversity
If you follow the world of Cosplay, no doubt you've noticed that it's unfortunately not immune to racism and ignorance. There have been a number of high profile cases of black face makeup, people of colour being told they can't Cosplay characters whose skin tone doesn't match their own, or being passed over by photographers at conventions.

At Hal-Con, we don't stand for stuff like that! Join two of our esteemed Cosplay guests, and a local favourite, as they discuss why it's so important to embrace diversity, especially in Cosplay -- a world that's meant to be fun and fictional not judgemental and angry.

Psssssst ... for even more awesome, be sure to drop by the cosplay guest tables located on the vendor floor, level 5.

The Plot Thickens: Plotting Your Novel
While a character is often a mirror that a reader uses to bring themselves into a story, and the setting can set the tone of what awaits; it is seldom that putting characters in a room to see what happens can constitute as a good plot.  And, while it can and has worked, the plot of one's narriative is the journey that you are taking your characters and readers on.  Let's face it, Lord of the Rings wouldn't have been the same if they didn't need to make that little jaunt into Mordor.

Our panel is here to discuss plotting out your story, how to trouble shoot those moments when you're not sure where to go next and maybe even what to do when your character takes your story someplace you hadn't meant to go.

Building the most notorious baddies of Doctor Who.
So, you want to build a Dalek? Excellent choice. But where do you start?
Where do you get plans? What tools and skills do you need? Where do you get the materials? How do you build them?

You can find answers to these and many more questions with Dalek Clifton who has been exterminating humans with the Canadian Dalek Empire since May of 2013.

Not a fan of the Daleks? Do you prefer to be upgraded into a Cyberman? We can help you with a sneak peak of a work-in-progress Nightmare in Silver Cyberman that is being built from scratch by sculpting pieces in clay, making silicon moulds and casting the wearable armour.

Bad guys have more fun but you have to build them first!

Copyright and Business Basics: Emerging Creative Industries from a Legal Perspective
Canadian copyright law seeks to promote the public interest by encouraging creative expression and the dissemination of artistic works while ensuring a reward for creators. But what happens when content creators are borrowing from others’ work? How will Canadian copyright law respond to cosplayers, streamers, and dorky developers more widely? Taken a step further, services like Patreon, Youtube, Twitch, and Kickstarter have made earning income from creative industries more attainable. How can industry pioneers structure their businesses and even better, what equipment, subscriptions, and other costs might they be able to deduct?

Please join lawyers Katie Paterno and David Wallace of McInnes Cooper as they provide a brief overview of the law in these areas and discuss some of what streamers, cosplayers, and others should be aware of as they pursue their passions.

Wands vs Staffs: The Great Debate
For years we've been debating the pros and cons of wands vs staffs in the magical world and which one reigns supreme. Come hear our opinions and let yours be heard!

The Horror Genre and Resisting Fluid Definitions
From “This film was inspired by actual events” to “it happened to a friend of a friend of mine,” horror has long held a terse relationship with reality; but what is it about the genre that causes it to defy its “death of the author” artistic freedom to be, in exchange, shackled to the reality of its audience? Horror’s relationship to the real, its ability to disrupt and make fluid the fictive genre categories that try to separate it from reality, makes it horrifying. What is actually being stated by the disclaimer of authenticity isn’t simply an acknowledgement of truth; it’s a warning, and the threat has nothing to do with copyrights or legalities. It’s a warning that the contents of the film have already breached the boundaries that separate fact from fiction, reality from the world of horror and the supernatural—and that makes its content a direct threat to its audience’s definitions of reality.

This panel examines multi-media forms, like Afterlife with Archie: Escape from Riverdale, The Mist, “Dear David,” Slender Man, and The Blair Witch Project, and audience reactions to those forms, in order to explore horror’s ability to resist and make fluid genre definitions, thus “disturbing the frame” to impose the threat of its form on those who dare to look.

This lecture will discuss Cavendish’s remarkable text and its representation of gender, science, and power.

Laser Tag - Saturday

Fanfiction 101
Fanfiction is a huge part of fandoms. Even mainstream media is taking note of it. Despite this, there is a shockingly tiny amount of help available on writing good fanfics. Fanfiction 101 would fill this void. It would create a space to discuss the oldest part of fandoms with enthusiasm. Hal-Con is a Con that celebrates not just fandoms but writers too. Hosting a panel on the art of writing fan fiction would combine the best of those worlds and bring something special to Hal-Con.
